Adoption: Philosophical Perspectives and Reflections


A/Prof Lisa Cassidy (Ramapo College of New Jersey, US) and A/Prof Mianna Lotz (Macquarie University, Australia) invite submissions of chapter abstracts for Adoption: Philosophical Perspectives and Reflections, a proposed collection of new essays (currently under discussion with Lexington Books). 


The aim of the collection is to bring attention to a diverse range of currently underexplored topics in the broad field of philosophical analysis of adoption and its implications and realities – ethical, epistemological, social, and political – for individuals, families, communities, and society more widely.  


Confirmed contributors to the proposed collection include: Brian Burkhart (University of Oklahoma), Lisa Cassidy (Ramapo College of New Jersey), Susan Harness (Colorado State University), Frances Latchford (York University, Toronto), Mianna Lotz (Macquarie University), Bonnie Mann (University of Oregon), Angel Torres Mann (University of Washington), Colin Macleod (University of Victoria, British Columbia), and Kim Park Nelson (Winona State University).  


Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:


Adoption and –

  • Familial relationships, kinship, parenthood
  • Rights, obligation, duty
  • Identity, self-knowledge
  • Emotions, dependency, vulnerability, power
  • Reproductive autonomy
  • Foster care, informal adoption, kinship care
  • Adoptive family structures and systems
  • Critical race theory, race identity, ethnic identity, racism, decolonisation
  • Disability studies, ableism
  • LGBTQ+ identities, non-binary identities, sex/gender studies
  • Local, national or international law or policy, politics, rights
  • Technologies of assisted reproduction
  • Ancestry-tracing technologies
  • Other changes or developments in the adoption sphere in the past decade


Interested contributors are invited to submit an abstract and c.v.  Contributions from voices that represent a diversity of experiences are especially welcome.


Timeline:

Abstract (500 word) submission deadline: April 15, 2022

Notification of acceptance: May 15, 2022

Chapter (7,000-9,000 words) submission deadline: October 31, 2022
